      <title>Council fuel-saving claims</title>
      <description><![CDATA[DORSET Council says it is reducing the impact of rising global fuel and energy prices by cutting how much fuel it uses and moving away from fossil fuels –  helping protect services and deliver better value for residents.

However, it has still not answered a request for the actual annual spend on fuel, despite a Freedom of Information request asking it to do so.

In a statement the council says long term work to modernise vehicles, improve buildings and use more renewable energy is significantly reducing both costs and carbon emissions.

      <title>Halifax to close Weymouth branch</title>
      <description><![CDATA[Weymouth is set to lose another bank branch, with Halifax in St Mary Street closing later this year.

The branch will shut for good on October 26th.

Portland Town Council says work on the tennis courts at Victoria Gardens is now complete.

The courts have reopened in time for the better weather and the start of Wimbledon.

Improvements include a lowered entrance path to make the facility fully accessible, new court markings, tournament-standard posts and nets, and a new fence and gate.

The council says the upgraded courts are free for everyone to use.

      <title>Witness appeal after Weymouth robbery</title>
      <description><![CDATA[Dorset Police is investigating a reported robbery in Weymouth.

It was reported that at around 12.45am on Friday 5 June, a man in his 20s was approached by a man and a woman on Westham Bridge.

Police say he was assaulted, threatened and had £10 in cash stolen.

The victim was checked over by the ambulance service and is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.]]></description>

      <title>Bird watching hide approved</title>
      <description><![CDATA[A new bird watching hide has been approved for the Wild Chesil Centre just off the Portland causeway road near Ferrybridge.

Councillors on the area planning committee, meeting in Dorchester on Monday, voted unanimously in favour of the new building.

It will sit to the side of the existing centre, on the bridge side, offering large windows to look out onto The Fleet.

Wyke councillor Kate Wheller proposed accepting the plans, saying it had been the intention to add a hide when the centre was first built.]]></description>

      <title>Weymouth knife attacker jailed</title>
      <description><![CDATA[A Weymouth man has been jailed after detectives tracked him down following a stabbing in North Dorset.

Joshua Moore, 21, of Weymouth, has been sentenced to five years in prison after a stabbing in Sturminster Newton.

The incident happened on Tuesday 30 September 2025 at an address in the town.

He was found guilty at Winchester Crown Court of grievous bodily harm with intent and assault by beating, and was sentenced on Friday 5 June.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[A campaign to restore the swimming rafts at Greenhill beach in Weymouth has attracted more than 4,700 petition signatures.

The two platforms were removed by Weymouth Town Council in 2025 because of concerns over insurance and lifeguard cover.

A nearby café owner says he has now found liability cover and wants to help bring the rafts back.

      <description><![CDATA[A Weymouth burger restaurant, which was hit by fire last year, could be turned into a training centre for up to 50 students.

If approved the plans will breathe new life into the site of the former Dorset Burger Company in King Street which was badly damaged by a fire in January 2025.

The proposals seek to provide a community café, shop, workshops, teaching space, a gym and a plant nursery – aimed at improving employment chances for young people with special educational needs.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Public toilets at Yeates in Portland have been temporarily closed after a serious drain blockage.

Portland Town Council says the blockage caused manhole covers nearby to lift, creating a possible safety hazard.

Specialist contractors are being brought in to clear the drains.

The toilets are expected to stay closed for several days.

      <description><![CDATA[A Dorset beach clean-up group says it was disgusted by the amount of litter left behind after the hot Bank Holiday weekend.

Weymouth Beach was covered with abandoned plastic toys, cans and other rubbish.

Volunteers from the Weymouth and Portland Marine Litter Project cleared more than 10 bags.

      <description><![CDATA[Dorset Police says the collision happened at around 4.20pm on Saturday 23 May on the A35 between Stadium Roundabout and the A352 junction.

It involved a grey Hyundai i10 and a black Ford Fiesta.

The male driver of the Hyundai sustained injuries that are not believed to be serious.

      <description><![CDATA[Dorset Police took part in the national Sceptre campaign from May 18 to May 24, aimed at tackling knife crime and raising awareness of the dangers of carrying weapons.

In Weymouth, officers carried out a warrant at an address in the Lynch Lane area.

A number of weapons were seized, including a Rambo knife, samurai swords and throwing knives.

Officers also recovered suspected drugs and three motorbikes believed to be stolen.]]></description>

      <title>Man jailed after assaulting five officers</title>
      <description><![CDATA[A man from Bridport has been jailed after five police officers were assaulted during an incident in Weymouth. Cade Robert David Adams, 21, of Bridport, has been sentenced to 11 months in prison.

Police were called to The William Henry in Frederick Place, Weymouth, on Thursday 2 April after reports of an aggressive man fighting outside.

Officers found Adams was in breach of a curfew and arrested him after he tried to flee.

During the arrest and later in custody, five officers were assaulted.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust responded to 3,941 incidents on Tuesday 26 May, making it the busiest day in the service’s history.

Between Friday and Tuesday, crews responded to 18,206 incidents, more than 24 per cent higher than the same period last year.

      <description><![CDATA[Dorset Police says the collision happened on Bridport Road in Dorchester at around 7.35am on Friday 16 May 2025.

It involved a white Fiat Panda and a bicycle.

The cyclist, 50-year-old Justin Loveland, was taken to Southampton Hospital, where he sadly died the following evening.

Following enquiries by Dorset Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team, a 54-year-old woman from Weymouth has been issued with a postal requisition.

She is due to appear at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Friday 29 May 2026 charged with causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.]]></description>
