Dorset’s Police and Crime Commissioner says new national crime legislation could strengthen efforts to tackle antisocial behaviour, violence and exploitation across the county.

David Sidwick has welcomed the introduction of the Crime and Policing Act 2026, describing it as one of the most significant criminal justice reforms in recent years.

He said Dorset was already well placed to implement many of the measures, particularly around neighbourhood policing, antisocial behaviour and support for victims.

The commissioner highlighted the expansion of drug testing on arrest as a key development, saying it would help identify offenders who need treatment and support, although he warned there were concerns about a lack of dedicated funding.

He also praised stronger measures aimed at tackling violence against women and girls, including new offences linked to stalking, spiking and abuse.

Mr Sidwick additionally welcomed tougher powers to seize vehicles involved in antisocial driving without the need for a prior warning, saying the changes would allow officers to act more quickly against nuisance driving.

He added that the success of the legislation would depend on proper funding, strong partnerships and effective local implementation.
