South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex have launched a major crackdown on fare evasion, targeting misuse of barcode tickets and e-tickets across their network, which includes Weymouth.

The initiative aims to address ‘short-faring’, where customers deliberately buy tickets for only part of their journey to avoid paying the full fare.

Using data from operations, retail and customer behaviour, the companies have identified patterns of fare evasion and responded with targeted enforcement, particularly at hotspots such as London Waterloo.

Since 2017, these efforts have reduced fare evasion by more than two thirds, with a further eleven percent drop in the past year.

Each year, around six and a half million journeys are made without a valid ticket across the network, costing South Western Railway close to forty million pounds annually.

A recent trial at London Waterloo saw a significant increase in detected offences, with one hundred and fifty-three short-faring cases identified in just a few weeks, compared to only seven in the same period last year.

Early results show that about a third of those previously caught are now buying the correct tickets.

The trial has already helped protect forty-five thousand pounds in revenue.

Some fare dodgers have tried to adapt by purchasing tickets from other stations, but data-led monitoring has helped identify and respond to these new patterns.

Case studies include individuals who evaded thousands of pounds in fares over several years by travelling between Hampshire, Surrey and London without the correct tickets.

South Western Railway’s revenue protection team is featured in a new documentary series, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their efforts to tackle fare evasion and keep train travel fair for all customers.
