Dorset Police says work to tackle repeat shoplifters in Weymouth is helping protect businesses and bring prolific offenders before the courts.

Dorset Police says neighbourhood officers and its dedicated Retail Crime Team are working together to support businesses and tackle shoplifting.

In Weymouth, officers secured a criminal behaviour order against Nicholas Gardner, 44, of no fixed abode, after he was linked to more than 60 theft offences.

The order initially banned him from Weymouth town centre and shops he had been barred from.

Police say when he continued offending outside the town centre, officers brought him back before the courts, where the order was widened and Gardner was jailed for 29 weeks.

The force says its Retail Crime Team has a positive outcome rate of more than 65 per cent in cases where stores support police action.

Dawn Rondeau-Irvine from We Are Weymouth BID said the joined-up approach between police, businesses and partners is helping keep shoplifting levels low in the town.
